Institute of Acoustics

The Institute of Acoustics is the UK's professional body for those working in acoustics, noise and vibration. It was formed in 1974 and now has some 3000 members from a rich diversity of backgrounds. The range of interests within the world of acoustics encompasses aerodynamics, architectural acoustics, building acoustics, electroacoustics, engineering dynamics, noise and vibration, hearing, speech, underwater acoustics, together with a variety of environmental aspects.

We developed the logo and identity for the Institute of Acoustics over 15 years ago, to both visually represent the science of acoustics while also being able to accommodate a broad range of specialist disciplines within the field.

To better encompass the growing range of recognised specialist areas within acoustics, in 2022 it was decided that the brand logo should include a descriptor while leaving the overall impression unchanged. At the same time the typography was adjusted to fit with the more contemporary brand values being introduced to help appeal to a younger audience. Imagery has also been used more boldly to help define the different acoustics groups.
